Research Information Technology Solutions (RITS) works collaboratively with researchers at HMS to identify, design, and deliver a wide range of technological solutions at the ever-changing forefront of biomedical research. The Project Management intern will help influence the success of the operational and strategic objectives of the client projects by helping the RITS Project Manager facilitate the execution of projects within the defined scope, timeline, and performance metric. The intern will help develop and implement processes and practices with members of the RITS team. This role will also be responsible with communication at various levels on items including project status, key milestones, and resource allocation.

Some Responsibilities Include:

  • Utilizing and maintaining documentation in support of product scope and design. 
  • Participating in all parts of the project cycle including scoping, design, development, testing, implementation and retrospective (lessons learned). This includes maintaining the framework for the process and creating measurable goals which can be assessed at the end of the project. 
  • Actively participating in managing & executing task schedules to ensure timely completion of all assigned duties.
  • Working with a diverse team to successfully drive projects to completion. 
  • Updating and maintaining project-related websites.
  • Coordinating and communicating with customers and stakeholders to develop processes and policies. 
  • Responsible for taking down minutes and action items during meetings.
  • Serving as a source of general business analysis, which help drive process improvement.

Research Information Technology Solutions (RITS) works collaboratively with researchers at Harvard Medical School (HMS) to identify, design, and deliver a wide range of technological solutions at the ever-changing forefront of biomedical research.  The intern will work closely with local IT groups, HMS Core Facilities, the HMS IT Client Services, and the Research Computing Teams. We strive to provide valued, sustainable, and well-supported, services that meet research needs.  

The key to success is the ability to: 

•    Develop relationships and resources with researchers to provide sustainable solutions. 
•    Aid in local research planning, goal setting, communication, and project coordination.
•    Provide quick effective solutions to local and proof-of-concept solutions.
•    Leverage the wealth of available IT expertise and to provide valued solutions.
•    Create reusable resources and solutions for the HMS research community.

Administrator Role:

The Junior DevOps Systems Administrator Internship gives students real hands on DevOps and Systems Administration experience. In this role, students will be responsible for, server deployments, monitoring, maintenance, developments, upgrades, and day to day support of the RITS supported IT Infrastructure.  A successful candidate is a self-starter, has strong collaboration and communication skills, and is passionate about cloud technology.

Additional Responsibilities Include:

•    Maintain technical configuration and knowledge base documentation.
•    Provide interim end user support as well as support for existing solutions at HMS.
•    Assist with migration planning and support.
•    Setting up new systems using available HMS campus resources.
•    Interface with engineering teams as an IT consultant and/or analyst, gathering customer requirements and ensuring consistency with organizational goals.
•    Research new technologies and trends to support IT and Engineering projects. 

Expected Educational Opportunities:

•    Provide core services to biomedical researchers.
•    Provide specialized tools as a service to researchers.
•    Collaborate on service design.
•    Exposure to High Performance Computing (HPC) for basic science research.
•    Exposure and networking opportunities with technology vendors. 
•    Gain practical experience with Cloud technology providers and services such as, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, DropBox, RackSpace, OpenStack, and ThreatStack.

Qualifications:

•    Intermediate experience with day to day production of Linux systems administration (applying patches and updates, securing, and installing software applications, and automation) 
•    Excellent communication and presentation skills.
•    Demonstrable critical thinking and creative problem solving skills.
•    Capable of delivering on requirements when working in a team and on solo projects. 
•    Ability to prioritize and evaluate customer specifications & service requirements.

Research Information Technology Solutions (RITS) works collaboratively with researchers at Harvard Medical School to identify, design, and deliver a wide range of technological solutions at the ever-changing forefront of biomedical research. Reporting to the Research Data Manager of Research IT Solutions, the Research Data Management Intern assists the Research Data Manager with providing support to researchers in the management of their research data throughout its lifecycle. Key to success is ability to identify and communicate research data management best practices.

Some Responsibilities Include:

  • Assist the Research Data Manager with providing support to researchers in the management of their research data throughout its lifecycle.
  • Provide assistance with identifying the specific data management needs of Harvard Medical School researchers, and with developing, delivering, and promoting new services in response to their expanding needs in data management.
  • Provide support to the Research Data Manager to help establish strong, collaborative relationships with researchers.
  • Provide support developing guidance documents and workflows related to data management best practices.
  • Create documentation, including capturing and creating metadata, and guidelines related to emerging data management needs.
  • Participate in outreach meetings with researchers and take meeting notes.
  • Respond directly to client inquiries.
  • Escalate encountered issues when required.
  • Perform other related responsibilities as needed.

Expected Educational Outcomes:

  • Conceptualization and planning for the creation and storage of digital data.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a MLIS degree, ideally with an emphasis on data management or digital data curation.

As the Systems Administration and Endpoint Services Intern, you will assist with operation of HMS IT Endpoint Services. The position will participate in administering Jamf Pro (Casper) and Ivanti (LanDesk) solutions as well as providing, Apple/Mac incident response and troubleshooting. 
 
This internship will provide:
•    Exposure to core systems administrative processes and participate in the creation and maintenance of operational, support and client-focused documentation
•    Develop and deploy application packages in a production environment
•    Experiences with triage, escalation and resolution of client and technician reported issue and requests.
•    Opportunities to administer and support on premise and cloud-based solutions with the Research IT Solutions group at HMS
•    Experience participating in service migration projects
•    Experience with new service rollout
•    Opportunities to work collaboratively with HMS Endpoint Services staff to troubleshoot and refine existing practices
 
Endpoint Services: (HMS IT CSG Endpoint Services Team) 50%
Participation in an ongoing initiative to improve and expand Endpoint Services into Research through the creation, publication, management of research application packages. Assisting in the testing, curation and deployment of these packages in a production environment. Aiding the creation, update and management of technical, support, and end user documentation.
 
Systems Administration: (HMS IT Research IT Solutions Team) 50%
In this role, students will be exposed to server deployments, monitoring, maintenance, developments, upgrades, and day to day support of the on-premise and cloud-based services.  A successful candidate is a quick learner, self-starter, has strong collaboration and communication skills, and is interested in cloud technology.
 
Requirements:
•    Experience with operation and troubleshooting of Windows (XP, 7, 8, 10) and Mac (10.6-10.11) Operating systems in a managed environment
•    Experience with software installation in both operating systems
•    Excellent communication and presentation skills.
•    Demonstrable critical thinking and creative problem solving skills.
•    Capable of delivering on requirements when working in a team and on solo projects.
•    Ability to prioritize and evaluate customer specifications & service requirements.
•    Ability to communicate technical ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.
•    Ability to be a strong “self-starter” and motivated to research and learn independently
 
Additional Requirements:
•    Experience/Familiarity with Linux (Ubuntu, CentOS) operating systems is a big plus.
